We start with a new National Coordinator, Dick Van Huss, who served one year. Rich Percifield followed him for the majority of the decade, leading from 1991-1999, with David Hatley serving briefly in 1999. Finally, Pastor Bernie Elliot became the National Coordinator in 1999 and has served as such since. Bernie is the longest serving BQ Coordinator the ministry has had since its beginning.
The National event continued to build on the growth of the 80s. In 1993, the 3rd place teams at each Regional event were invited to participate in their own division, with the top four joining the other top 16 teams. This continued until 1996 when 24 teams, the top four from each region, were allowed to attend Nationals. It also expanded its locale, being held not only in Springfield, MO but also in Portland, OR; Ft. Worth, TX; Minneapolis, MN; St. Louis, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Springfield, VA and Lakeland, FL.
The 1995 event saw a major shift from quizzing over the KJV to the NIV, which continues today. Twenty-eight states were represented at Nationals over the course of the decade and winning teams came from FL, MO, CA, MI, PA, NY, KY, and TX. 1997 saw the first-ever tie for top scorers between Jeremy Horn and Kent Piancenti. Kent would go on to solidify his title, however, by being the sole top scorer in 1998 and 1999. Other top scorers were Brian Gibbons (90), Kimberly Smalley (91), current Wesley Chapel coach Joshua Weber (92), Lisa Wootton (93-94), Sanejo Leonard (95), and Daniel Slater (96).
That wraps up the 90s and sets the stage for Bible Quiz in the next century. For a more complete look at BQ history, please visit biblequiz.ag.org/bq-connection.
EMMAUS EXPERIENCE ISRAEL: A journey to Israel available to all AG Bible Quizzers ages 17-20. Walk in the footsteps of Jesus and the disciples, the Patriarchs and prophets and discover the roots of your faith. "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the scriptures to us?" (Luke 24:32)
The goal of Emmaus Experience Israel is for Christian young people to journey into the land of the Bible, studying it in context, experiencing their faith where it began. For quizzers especially, the Bible becomes three-dimensional as you visit the actual sites and settings of the scriptures you've memorized.
Every trip includes experiences like hiking the land, feeling the ancient dirt of Israel, and sailing on the same lake as Jesus and the disciples. It builds a foundation of faith upon which your lives can rest. Not only will you study the Bible on site, you will experience God, encountering Him in the land of the Bible!
Our prayer is that every participant will end their journey saying, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the scriptures to us?" (Luke 24:32).
Join one of our upcoming trips!

Make sure you check with your District BQ Coordinator for the NMA/MMA/DA deadlines he/she has set. A reminder to all DBQCs, please email your list of award recipients to firstname.lastname@example.org by May 4th to ensure they can be listed in the Nationals program. An updated breakdown of the book of Jude can be found here on the BQ website. There are two short exclamations that had been overlooked but are now added since last month's CC. As a reminder, Jude will only be quizzed over by teams participating at the National Finals event in July.
Corrections in the Scripture Portion
Seth Sundell - A-League Official Writer "A" League questions will be simple and straightforward with early interruption points. 10 point complete answers will typically have 7 words or less and 20s & 30s will be from just a single verse. I will attempt to progress from more essence questions to more quotation questions as we move throughout the competition. As competition progresses you'll see an increase in the length of answers (except for 10s), an increase in the parts of questions and answers, and an increase in cross-reference and concordance questions. For the first four League Meets there will be 2 Application questions in each set. ** --Seth Sundell, Official writer for "A" League questions over Hebrews & Peter
Mark Whitehead - MSQ Official Writer For 10-point questions, you will find them straight-forward and easy, usually seven words or less from League to Regional's. I try to make sure that the quizzer can interrupt 10-point questions around the second or third word. For 20 and 30-point questions - League level questions will be very easy, most coming from a single verse, gaining a little bit in difficulty through each league. District questions will be a little bit harder, stepping up the quotes to more than one verse and adding some cross reference material within chapters. Regional questions will be harder still, adding some concordance material. There will be 10 "Middle School Study Questions" * per set for League 1, then 5 per set for Leagues 2-4. You will find an average of 2 Quotation Questions/Quotation Completion Questions for each set from Leagues 1-5, as well as an average of 2 Chapter Analysis questions. For Chapter Analysis, I will put both the chapter and the verse in the question. There will be also 2 Application Questions for the first four league meets in each set.** -- Mark Whitehead, Official writer for "Middle School" questions over Hebrews
* Middle School Study Questions are found on the Basic 5 CD
** Application questions are found at http://agwebservices.org/Content/RSSResources/heb-application-questions.pdf
