Wed, 05 Jul 2017 - 8:01 AM CST

NORTH EAST, Md. — The first full day of main round-robin play is complete at the 2017 Assemblies of God Teen Bible Quiz National Finals, and the defending runners-up are atop the standings, but just barely.

Maple Lane Assembly "Final Greetings" from Deposit, NY lost its first round of the day, but went on to win its next eight for an 8-1 record after nine rounds in the Championship Division. That's one game ahead of a pack of four teams with 7-2 records, including "The Flames" from Jams River Church in Ozark, MO; "Those Dogs" from Cdear Park Church in Bothell, WA; "Depth of Nyste" from Living Hope Worship in Swedesboro, NJ; and "Made the Two Groups One" from Dream City Church in Scottsdale, AZ. Alone in sixth place is First Assembly of Lexington, KY "I Do Not Know!" with a 6-3 mark.

In the individual standings for the division, Zak Kellock of Scottsdale leads with 1,020 points (113.3 points per game), followed by Halle Reisinger from Newpart, PA Asembly with 950 points.

In the Challenger Division, Neighborhood Church of Bellevue, WA leads the way with an 8-1 record, with three teams tied for second a game behind Bellevue. Zach Ponraj of Tacoma, WA Life Center leads the individual standings with 770 points (85.6 average).

Play continues with eight rounds on Wednesday, followed by the last two games of round-robin play on Thursday morning. That is followed by the top four Championship Division teams battling for the national title in a single-elimination playoff.
